Starting a new blog feels like opening a fresh chapter in life. I’m Shanika Wright, and this is my first post—a chance to share my story, my passion for television, and the path that brought me here. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to work both in front of and behind the camera, or how a degree from Georgia State University can lead to a career in TV production, you’re in the right place.

From Georgia State University to the Newsroom
Graduating from Georgia State University in 2018 was a proud moment for me. I studied hard, made connections, and learned the ins and outs of media production. But the real learning began when I landed my first job as a news producer in Tallahassee, Florida, later that same year.
Tallahassee was my introduction to the fast-paced world of news. As a producer, I was responsible for shaping the stories viewers saw every day. It meant coordinating with reporters, editors, and camera crews, making quick decisions, and ensuring everything ran smoothly on air. From covering destructive hurricane seasons to local mass shootings and everything in between, the pressure was intense, but it taught me how to stay calm and focused under tight deadlines.
Life Behind the Scenes and On Camera
While my main role was behind the scenes, I also had opportunities to be on camera. Being in front of the lens gave me a new perspective on storytelling. It’s one thing to produce a segment, but it’s another to deliver it live, connecting with the audience directly. This experience helped me appreciate the teamwork needed to create compelling television.
Working behind the scenes and on camera gave me a well-rounded view of the industry. I learned how every role, no matter how visible, contributes to the final product. From scripting and editing to lighting and sound, each piece matters.
Moving to Huntsville: A New Chapter as a Lifestyle Producer
In April 2021, I took a step forward in my career by becoming a lifestyle producer in Huntsville, Alabama. Working with the Tennessee Valley Living team has allowed me to explore a different side of television—focusing on stories that inspire, entertain, and connect with viewers on a personal level.
Lifestyle production is about creativity and variety. I work on segments about food, health, community events, and more. It’s rewarding to highlight positive stories and bring fresh ideas to the screen. This job also lets me collaborate with a diverse team, which keeps every day interesting.

(YES, this is THEE Dolly Parton, this job has given me opportunities I would have never imagined... and YES this is still the number one career highlight LOL)
What I’ve Learned Along the Way
My journey from Georgia State to television producer has been full of lessons. Here are a few that stand out:
Adaptability is key. News and lifestyle production require quick thinking and flexibility. Plans change, and you have to adjust without losing momentum.
Communication matters. Whether coordinating a live broadcast or planning a shoot, clear communication keeps everyone on the same page.
Passion drives success. Loving what you do makes the long hours and challenges worthwhile.
Teamwork creates magic. No one produces a show alone. Trust and respect among colleagues make the difference.
Looking Ahead
I’m excited to continue growing in this industry and sharing my experiences with you through this blog. Whether you’re interested in television production, storytelling, or just curious about my journey, I hope my posts offer insight and inspiration.
